British soul singer Duffy scoops award for 'Mercy'
2008-06-18
LONDON (AFP) - British singer Duffy's single "Mercy" has been named song of the year in the annual awards by Mojo magazine, while the Sex Pistols and Led Zeppelin were also honoured. The Welsh soul singer was beaten to the best album award by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds's "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" in the awards, announced late Monday. Mojo's editor-in-chief Phil Alexander told the audience at the awards ceremony in London that "Mercy" was "timeless". "It could really have come from any period in time over the last 50 years," he said. The award for best breakthrough act went to The Last Shadow Puppets, the spin-off project of Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner. The Sex Pistols won the icon award, as the ageing punks recovered from entertaining more than 50,000 people at the Isle of Wight Festival in southern England on Saturday. Led Zeppelin, who received critical acclaim for their first concert in 19 years at London's O2 arena in December, won the best live act. Veteran US singer Neil Diamond, 67, was honoured with the classic songwriter prize and heavy metal band Motorhead took the hero award. And Genesis won a lifetime achievement award for selling 150 million albums worldwide.
